Coach Lyons just completed his 15th year of coaching and is thrilled to begin his first year as a Spartan! He began his coaching career as a freshman/varsity assistant in 2003 at Normal Community High School, advancing to the state quarterfinals. After, Coach Lyons left high school coaching and took a position as a graduate assistant at Eureka College, where he also served as the Assistant Defensive Coordinator & Recruiting Coordinator for football, and Head Men's and Women's Track Coach. He completed his education degree in the Spring of 2007 and began teaching and coaching at Normal University High School.
At University High School, Coach Lyons served as a varsity assistant (2007- 2012) and defensive Coordinator (2010 - 2012). During this time, University High School qualified for the playoffs 4 times and led the Corn Belt conference in points allowed during the 2007, 2011, & 2012 seasons, and led class 5A for points allowed during the 2012 season. Coach Lyons left U-High to accept the Head Football Coaching position at Morton High School in 2013, followed by a position as the Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach at Bloomington High School.
Aside from coaching football, Coach Lyons has a thorough and comprehensive strength and conditioning background. In his 15 years , he has coached and worked directly with nearly 50 Division one athletes. Most Notably: Keita Bates-Diop (Big Ten player of the year and potential NBA Lottery pick), Arion Worthman (current QB at Air Force), Kenny Robertson (UFC Fighter), and Zach McAllister (pitcher for the Cleveland Indians).
Eric and his wife, Maureen, live in Morton and have three children: Hazel (8), June (6), and Peter (5). He does not claim to be an expert carver of pumpkins.
